The NAP unit-level final (for those qualifying at the club-level) will be October 29th (Sat) at the Bridge Center. It will be two sessions. For those qualifying at the unit-level (about 50% of each strat), the District 16 NAP final will be at the San Antonio sectional, Jan 13 - 16 (Fri - Mon). District-level winners (3 or 4 in each strat) advance to the 2006 Spring Nationals (Dallas, TX).
Bob Chambers (the ACBL's first "4-star teacher") will offer a bridge clinic focusing on Standard American (5-card majors) on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 for 10 weeks beginning September 29th at the NW Center "bridge room." This course is a recommended prerequisite for a subsequent course on Modern Bidding Conventions which Bob will teach in early 2006. The cost is $85. There are flyers available.
Leona Rieger offers a variety of (daytime) beginning/duplicate lessons at the Senior Center for persons 50+ years of age. Sign up through the Senior Center in person or by calling 474-5921. Kevin Perkins offers (evening) beginning and intermediate lessons each fall and spring semester through the University of Texas Informal Classes program. There is no age limit and no required affiliation with UT. Call UT at 232-5277 to register. Kevin also continues the (morning) Lifetime Learning Program bridge lessons beginning in September at the NW Center.
There are time slots of 2 - 3 hours' duration available at the NW Center to give lessons. Contact Bill Wells, facility director of the NW Center in person or at 458-4107. Possible times to consider are before or after the Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday club games.
Calling All Directors:
Any certified director may direct Unit 207 events. The Unit Board schedules Unit events and assigns directors thereto (and even pays them!). The Board knows of many such directors, but there may well be some certified directors "out there" unknown to the Board. If you wish to direct Unit 207 events, please let the Unit Board know. There are Board-established policies about directing Unit events (pay schedule, playing bridge while directing, players showing up without partners, double ranking, etc.). Larry Davis (and others) have copies of these Unit Board policies if you wish to have one.
Just what is the City Championship that is being held August 6th? It is a double-session, stratified, open pair event held annually in the summer by Unit 207. The event was started in 1999. The winning pair of each flight (A: 2000+, B: 500-1999, C: 0-499 NLM) has their names inscribed on a plaque and are dubbed the City Champions for that year. A paper copy of that plaque is posted on the Unit 207 bulletin board at the NW Center.
July NLM Sectional:
The tournament chairman/director was Larry Davis. (He now has a much better appreciation for the work that ACBL tournament directors do.) Other chairmen were: Mildred Breed and Diana Rogers - Hospitality, Kevin Perkins - Partnerships, and Clint Schuhmacher - Photography. An outstanding meal was catered by Mike Stout, Unit 207 master chef. The Chairman and Unit Board would also like to thank the many individuals who helped set-up and cleanup the site.
The Mentor Program is being revived! The last one of a few years back was quite successful, and a new one will begin in September. Current plans call for "mentees" (those being mentored) to have less than 100 masterpoints and for mentors to have 200+ masterpoints. If you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee, please call Linda Anthony at 327-0146. The program will run through May of 2006, with a "vacation" during December. Mentors are to play bridge (free!) with their mentees twice per month. See the purple flyers at local club games for more information.
