Grand National Teams (GNT)
The unit-level GNT qualifier for flights B and C will be held on Saturday, March 11th. It is a two-session event with a meal between sessions. The upper half of each flight qualifies to go the district-level (usually held in Richardson (Dallas) over the Memorial Day weekend). The national-level is at the Summer Nationals. Must play both sessions.
New Game in Town
There is a 12:30 game on Tuesday at the South Austin Senior Center (3911 Manchaca, about 1/2 mile north of Ben White/US 290W). The game is not age-restricted. Directors are Mark McAllister and Larry Davis.
The Thursday morning restricted game at the Bridge Center has been changed. Beginning February 2nd, the upper masterpoint limit is 750 (was 600).
Annual Unit 207 Meeting
The annual meeting will be held February 4th (Sat) at the Bridge Center at 1:00. A stratified open pairs game will follow at 1:30 (free, if attended meeting). The nominees for three positions on the nine-member unit board are: Joe Black, Robert Donathan, Lawton Hutchison, Pat Long, Mark McAllister and Phyllis Tate. Additional nominations may be made from the floor. Ballots will be mailed to all Unit 207 members a few days later. They may be returned by mail or at a local club game. The six members whose terms are continuing are: Linda Anthony, Mildred Breed, Laura Delfeld, Hal DeShong, Mary Anne Laier and Diana Rogers.
The time for unit events (usually held on Saturdays at the Bridge Center) will usually be 1:30 for one-session events and 12:30 for two-session events. Meals will not necessarily be served between sessions of two-session events (1.5 hours allowed between sessions for a meal). Check the flyers for each event. Flyers are usually available at the various clubs several weeks in advance. The Unit web site will also have information.
District 16 NAP
The district-level NAP finals were held in conjunction with the San Antonio Sectional in January. The top three places in Flights A and C and the top four places in Flight B qualify to play at the national-level this March in Dallas. Earning a trip in Flight A were Mildred Breed and Clint Schuhmacher (3rd) and in Flight B were Inger Blount and Jeanette Hughes (2nd). Honorable mention to: Jim Griffin/Ken Schutze in Flight A (6th), Jeff Ford/Adam Ruprecht (6th) and Karen Snyder/Nancy Boothe (9th) in Flight B and Larry Smith/David Warner (4th, first alternates) in Flight C.
Attendance was great at the sectional. The tournament chairmen were Laura Delfeld and Mark McAllister. Other chairmen: Joe Black - Partnerships and Kevin Perkins - Supplies.
Bridge At UT
A bridge club will begin soon on the UT campus. This came about largely because of the work done by Flora Pettit (PhD, a former faculty member). Kevin Perkins will be the club manager/director.
When do you inform the opponents that there has been a failure to alert or that an alert has not been properly explained? There seems to be constant confusion about this. Consider the mnemonic YOND (archaic for yonder). Yes - Offense, No - Defense. If your side has the contract (offense), notify (yes) the opponents (defenders) before the opening lead is made. If your side is on the defense, do not (no) notify the declarer until after the hand has been played. Note that the defense eventually (after the play of the hand) does notify the declarer but not (no) before the play of the hand.
Tricks Won or Lost
Neither the dummy nor the defenders may call attention to previous tricks which partner has incorrectly signified as won or lost. Each defender and the declarer is responsible for keeping track of tricks won or lost. You may call attention to the trick just quitted (completed) if partner has it wrong. Procedural penalties may be assessed for improperly calling partner's attention. After the hand is over, the correct number of tricks won or lost may be ascertained.
