City Championship

Just what is the City Championship that is being held August 18th?   It is a double-session, stratified, open pair event held annually in the summer by Unit 207.  The event began in 1999.  The winning pair of each flight (A: 2000+, B: 500-1999, C: 0-499 NLM) has their names inscribed on a plaque and are dubbed the City Champions for that year.

NAP Games

Club-level qualification began in June.  There are 5 NAP games remaining (all at the Bridge Center).  The strats are: C - less than 500 masterpoints and not a Life Master, B - 500 to 1999 and A - 2000+.  July date: 29th (Sun).  August dates are: 11th (Sat), 13th (Mon), 22nd (Weds eve), and 26th (Sun). The unit final (for those qualifying at the club-level) will be October 20th (Sat) at the Bridge Center.  It will be a two-session event.  For those qualifying at the unit-level (about 50% of each strat), the District 16 NAP final will be held at the San Antonio sectional in January 2008. District-level winners (3 or 4 in each strat) advance to the national-level, played at the Spring Nationals (Detroit).

End-of-Summer Party

Come to the Bridge Center to celebrate (or lament) the end of summer on August 12th (Sunday).  Watermelon and other goodies will be served.  The pairs game will be handicapped.  Depending upon the masterpoint holdings of the pair, points will be added or subtracted from your final score (as is sometimes done in sectional team events).  One half of the masterpoint awards will be based on the handicap, and one-half will be awarded normally (handicap not considered).

Mentor Program

The Mentor Program is being renewed!  Current plans call for "mentees" (those being mentored) to have less than 10 masterpoints and may not have previously been a mentee.  If you are interested in being a mentee (or a mentor), please email or call Charlie Aufill at CharlieA@austin.rr.com or 472-6625.  Sign-up deadline is September 15th.  The six-month program will run from October to April, with a recess in December.  On the first Sunday of each month, the Bridge Center will host a mentor/mentee game, separate from the regular open game.  Mentors are to play bridge (free!) with their mentees (who do pay, but only for themselves) twice per month.  Mentors/mentees may play bridge more than twice per month, but the Unit will subsidize (the mentors) only two games/month.

Extra Masterpoints!

Whenever two independent (segregated) games are held simultaneously (Monday night, Wednesday night, Thursday afternoon and Sunday), the "upper" game (the one with no masterpoint limitations) awards masterpoints based on the combined table count (with rare exceptions).  This often results in a masterpoint award of 1.5 (or even more if it's a special game) for first place in the "upper" game.  (The "lower" game is unaffected.)  The Saturday night team game also awards more masterpoints to the "upper" flight (if there is enough attendance to have two flights).

Mechanical Errors

A mechanical error occurs when your fingers (not your mind) go astray, grabbing the wrong bid from the bidding box.  It is not a mechanical error if you made the wrong bid due to a mental error, even if you immediately realize the error.  Suppose that your partner bids 2H over your 1NT and you raise to 3H.  You immediately realize that you have forgotten that you are playing transfers and that you should have bid Spades.  You have just made a mental error.  Do not call the director and do not give your error away by some comment, facial expression and/or body language.  A genuine mechanical error may be corrected, provided that your partner has not subsequently bid.  Simply call the director.  If you made a mechanical error and your partner has subsequently bid, you have to suffer the consequences. Do not call the director and do not give your (mechanical) error away by some comment, facial expression and/or body language.
