Goodwill Hunting

The Unit 207 Board is looking for some goodwill. A District 16 awards program allows each unit to choose two of its members to recognize each year as exemplars of friendliness, courtesy, sportsmanship and all-around don't-you-wish-every-bridge-player-was-like-this. If you know of someone who fits this description, please notify the Unit Board. Last year's award recipients were Orpha Gips and Madeline Randolph.

Unit Board News

Robert Donathan was selected by the Unit 207 Board to fill a vacancy on the Board. .

Notice of Proposed Bylaws Changes

ACBL Unit 207 Austin Area

The Unit 207 Board of Directors proposes to modify Articles V and VII of the unit bylaws. The changes, and reasons for proposing the changes, are given below. Deleted words are indicated by strikethrough font, and added words are indicated by bold font. The complete existing bylaws can be found on the web at http://www.d16acbl.org/U207/sbruce/bylaws/bylaws.htm.

Article V, Paragraph 1. The only regular meetings of the members of the unit shall be the annual meetings, which, unless otherwise provided by the Board of Directors, shall be held in February of each year. The time and place of such meeting shall be posted at each Unit clubs meeting place for a period of no less than two weeks prior to the annual meeting. Ten Five percent of the Unit membership shall constitute a quorum.

Reason for Proposed Change: Unit 207 has over 750 members. Considerably less than half are active duplicate players. Despite the offer of free play after the meeting, annual meetings in recent years have drawn fewer than 10% of the membership.

Article VII. A. At its first meeting after March 1 of each year, the Board of Directors shall elect from among its members a president, a vice-president, a secretary and a treasurer; the offices of treasurer and secretary may be combined. The Board of Directors may elect a treasurer from the members of the Board, or may appoint a qualified treasurer from the general unit membership. In the latter case the appointee would be a non-voting member of the Board of Directors. [Rest of paragraph unchanged.]

Reason for Proposed Change: Unit 207 has substantial income and expenses from holding sectional and regional tournaments and unit games. Financial oversight of the funds by a person experienced in such money matters is critical. The best possible candidates for such a job may not be elected Board members, and this fact should not bar those qualified candidates from the job of Treasurer.

IMPORTANT! The proposed changes must be voted on by the unit membership. To maximize attendance for the vote and ensure a quorum, the vote will take place between sessions of the CHRISTMAS PARTY GAME on Sunday December 9 2007. Your presence is requested!
